Charcuterie -- really, really, really nice coldcuts -- is becoming…
I was in Collingwood this past weekend, and I can’t tell you how impressed I was with the food I ate. If you are looking for a road trip, or planning a get-away near the water, then I can highly recommend this two hour trip to the Blue Mountains region.
The drive itself is terrifically beautiful on slowly winding roads and through gorgeous farmland on verdant rolling hills that is due north of us here in Waterloo Region. It’s interesting to note that you are sort of following the Grand River which is so much a part of our region. In that respect, we are connected with this farmland and countryside in a very literal and important way.
Also worth noting is that south of the area is the terrain that the proposed 937-hectare Melancthon quarry was supposed to be excavated near Orangeville and could have possibly effected our water conditions here. That plan was overturned through a loud and well-coordinated grassroots protest.
As for the food, I visited Northwinds Brewhouse & Eatery where there are some excellent dishes like a beef carpaccio and delicious house-brewed beer, Pie Wood Fired Pizza Joint, a small franchise in towns north of Toronto, which makes a very good wood-fired thin-crust pizza and The Smoke, a barbecue joint. There is also a good “farm to cup” coffee shop called Ashanti, another small franchise which includes an Elora, Ont., outlet.
One excellent quality is that these venues are all within a few minutes’ walk of each other (albeit on a very busy street), making this a really good vacation or weekend-getaway location.
