Ryan Murphy and Carly Blasutti have run MamaPapa Catering Co. over the past several years, but they really put themselves on the culinary map when they opened their delicious venture PUBLIC Kitchen & Bar a few years ago.

Located at 295 Lancaster St. W, Kitchener, PUBLIC serves a tremendously popular tapas menu and a variety of special dishes throughout the week. Make sure you check them out.

To be the best cook you can be, I think you have to stick to the basics. Get good old-school cookbooks — Larousse, Julia Child and those kinds of books — and really try those recipes out until you get good at them.

Once you get those foundations down, you can play around more. I think you should stay away from all the new fancy stuff. You don’t need a pile of crazy equipment. Get good cast-iron pans, good quality knives and buy good ingredients. Get good at the recipes with them and have some fun and play around.
