The Bengali New Year — Pohela Boishakh — is celebrated April 14.
However, with a diaspora of more than 400 Bengali-speaking people from Bangladesh, Assam, Tripura and the West Bengal part of India living in Waterloo Region, a new year’s event is taking place April 21 at Emmanuel United Church on Bridgeport Road in Waterloo.
The event starts at 5:30 p.m.
Pohela Boishakh recognizes the Bengali agrarian calendar and harvest season in South Asia. In Bangladesh, the first day of the new year is greeted at sun-rise with a song under a banyan tree. Those are pretty cool trees!
During the festivities at Emmanuel, you’ll see traditional dress and sample traditional food. The event is organized by Bangladesh Cultural Society of Kitchener-Waterloo.
