March is Nutrition Month and Waterloo Region’s largest hospital, Grand River Hospital (GRH), with its comprehensive range of services provided, prepares about 1,300 meals a day at their Kitchener-Waterloo and Freeport campuses.
That’s a lot of cooking, and it includes tailoring dozens of different diets in order to meet specific needs that people have.
An interesting sidebar is that while the ultimate goal is to get patients healthy and mobile and back home as soon as possible, the nutrition and food services team at GRH tries to source local ingredients and foods as much as they can. In fact, roughly 18 percent of their food purchases are for locally-sourced products.
