Call it the bespoke, craft movement, or whatever you want, but it very often ends up very delicious–and local.
During the busy and hectic week that is Oktoberfest in Waterloo Region, Workplace One is hosting a LOKAL “dinner market” that speaks to the idea of crafted and examines how the tradition of Oktoberfest translates into our current community of local makers, producers and artisans.
It’s a celebration of a community of small-batch producers that takes place starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, in the outside courtyard (rain or shine) in Kitchener’s The Breithaupt Block. Workplace One offers small business, entrepreneurs, professionals and anyone in between, a customized and unique work environment in a shared office community. It is supported by sponsorship from The City of Kitchener and Perimeter Developments.
“LOKAL is an exciting festival for us because it’s an opportunity to celebrate our region and community and the long-held traditions that are so deeply rooted within it, but more importantly to evaluate how these traditions have evolved and have meaning in our current community,” says organizer Andrea Kim of Workplace One.
LOKAL presents a selection of craft brewers, mixologists and artisans, all of whom will showcasing their products, so visitors can spend a few hours eating, drinking and celebrating some very talented artisans at the beautifully transformed Breithaupt Block.
“We have a wealth of amazing small-batch producers in our community that make our particular food and beverage culture unique,” says Kim given that most Oktoberfest celebrations overlook these producers in favour of large-scale corporate sponsorship.
“We really wanted to centre the event back on the community, first and foremost.”
