Italian panzarotti and their Sicilian cousin ’mpanatiggi, Jamaican patty, Cornish…
It’s been well publicized now on a couple of media, so think of this as a reminder: some time today, Thursday, June 20, go eat a club sandwich and support not only the Jurvinski Cancer Centre (JCC) but more importantly Alex Janke, chef de cuisine at Gilt Restaurant Bar and Lounge in downtown Kitchener.
Janke, 26, was recently diagnosed with stage-four brain cancer. He’s worked in the industry in the region for quite some time and at Gilt since it opened several years ago. I’ve had occasion to speak with Alex several times in my capacity as a food writer. He’s a very nice guy and a very good cook, and we know that he’ll been keeping a positive attitude and fighting very hard. He is undergoing treatment at Hamilton’s JCC.
That’s the simple upshot of it — now we need to do something.
Alex is actively fundraising for brain cancer treatment and research by making and selling grey-beaded bracelets, and that’s why you should do something and go buy a club sandwich June 20 to support him and others in the same situation. (Remember, there but by the grace of God ….)
The (often) triple-decker club sandwich is a favourite of Alex’s, so nearly two dozen area restaurants are creating their interpretation of it. Proceeds of club-sandwich sales will go the Jurvinski Cancer Centre on behalf of Alex.
Here’s a list of venues (and more have probably joined the cause since time of writing):
When you buy a club sandwich, tell the world: use the hashtags #kwclubsforbraincancer #teamchalex #clubcrawl.
There really isn’t much better to eat than a good sandwich, and these sandwiches — because of what they represent — are great.
Let’s do this for Alex and those that he wants to support.
