A new brewery and restaurant combo is ready to appear in the Waterloo Region in the very near future. That’s very good news.
The Baden Hotel, a building that has been in business since the 1870s and has most recently been home to EJ’s Tavern, is about to get a new look. The long-standing structure and business will get a remodelling and re-branding and ally itself with the new Baden Brewery.
Baden Hotel and EJ’s owner Abhay Patel, a Waterloo resident, told Waterloo Region Eats today that a brew pub will be built on-site. The brewery will focus on locally crafted beer and will eventually include a retail store for merchandise and suds.
Patel’s partner in the brewery is Nathan Russell, both of whom own a variety of businesses in Waterloo Region — and both of whom stress that the spirit of EJ’s pub fare and atmosphere will remain and will cater to families, sports teams and beer enthusiasts.
According to Russell, the original structure of the Baden Hotel was built in the mid-1850s by Christopher Kraus on land purchased from Jacob Beck, the father of Sir Adam Beck and pioneer of electricity in Ontario.
