Langdon Heads to Culinary Championships

After a regional Gold Medal Plates competition in Toronto, Jonathan Gushue and his team from Langdon Hall Country House Hotel & Spa will travel to Kelowna, BC, February 10-11 for the Canadian Culinary Championships.

The competition at the CCC is a fundraiser for the Canadian Olympic Foundation in support of Canadian Olympic and Paralympic athletes as they prepare to head to London for the Olympic Summer Games in July and August.

Gushue and his team of two cooks are one of nine Gold Medal Plate winning teams who advance to the CCC from across the country.

Teaming up with Beamsville’s Organized Crime Winery for the Gold Medal Plates last November, Gushue prepared a dish that harkens to his east coast roots and paired it with OCW’s 2009 Fumé Blanc: Brussels sprouts, white and black salsify chips, preserved oysters, duck eggs, and smoked trout caviar.

In Kelowna, Gushue and his small crew will compete in a mystery wine pairing challenge, a “Black Box” competition, and a grand finale during which he will create a dish to pair with an Organized Crime Wine.

One of Canada’s pre-eminent food writers, James Chatto, is the the event’s National Culinary Advisor and Head Judge. He wrote of Gushue’s creation in the regional competition, “I don’t recall tasting a more elegant and refined dish at any previous Toronto GMP event. It looked like a tiny salad – almost a garnish – in the bottom of the plate, but there was a miniature world of flavour to be found.”
